The Portland Streetcar

After four years of planning and construction, the streetcar line that runs from Good Samaritan Hospital to Portland State University finally opened on July 20th, 2001. At 9:45am, a parade of dancers and people from Europe marched with the five streetcars that lined up, carrying V.I.P.’s and passengers. Regular service began at noon.

Throughout the weekend, festivities occurred along the route — music, dancing, performances, raves, shows, barbeques, etc. This shows that the community was brought together by this project and gave it a very good kick-off for service, especially the new neighborhood in Pearl District.

Streetcar facts:

  • 66-feet long
  • 8-feet wide

  • Nearly 70% of the streetcar line is in Tri-Met’s Fareless Square
  • It serves Portland State University and Good Samaritan Hospital
  • Some Tri-Met MAX operators will be transferred to run the streetcar line
  • And finally, it’s another smart transit element to a great city!

MAX Light-Rail System

Portland’s light-rail system, owned and operated by Tri-Met, is officially designated “Metropolitan Area Express,” but is commonly known as “the MAX.” The first part of the MAX light-rail line, from Gresham (east of Portland) to downtown Portland, opened in 1986. The line was extended to Hillsboro, 18-miles west of Portland, in 1998. Then, on September 10th, 2001, the east-west MAX line was named the Blue Line when a new extension to the Portland Airport from the City Center, via Gateway TC, became the Red Line.

One additional extension is presently under construction, Interstate MAX, will be known as the Yellow Line. As planned, it will link downtown Portland with the Expo Center via the Rose Quarter Transit Center, and this line is not scheduled to open until the fall of 2004.

To obtain additional information about any of these lines, click on the MAX line (on map above) you have chosen. You will see a more detailed, clickable map of that particular line and be offered various options to obtain more information.
